Shorter days, fatigue, compromised night vision, rush hour and impaired drivers are some of the risks we face when driving at night. These risks become especially pronounced moving into the weekend, with fatal crashes peaking on Saturday nights, according to NSC analysis of NHTSA data.

Night vision is the ability to see well in low-light conditions. As we age, we have greater difficulty seeing at night. A 50-year-old driver may need twice as much light to see as well as a 30-year-old. At age 60 and older, driving can become even more difficult, according to the American Optometric Association. Some older drivers also may have compromised vision due to cataracts and degenerative eye diseases.

These staggering numbers are backed up by a report by NHTSA that 100,000 police-reported crashes are a result of driver fatigue. Most crashes or near-misses happen at the times you would expect drivers to be tired: 4 to 6 a.m., midnight to 2 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m., according to NSF.

Drowsy driving puts everyone on the road at risk. Losing two hours of sleep has the same effect on driving as having three beers, and tired drivers are three times more likely to be in a car crash if they are fatigued.

Evening rush hour (between 4 and 7 p.m. weekdays) is a dangerous time to drive due to crowded roadways and drivers eager to get home after work. In winter, it's dark during rush hour, compounding an already dangerous driving situation.

While drunk driving has declined by about one-third since 2007, the number of drivers under the influence of drugs has increased. Between 2013 and 2014, 22% of drivers tested positive for a drug that would cause impairment, according to a roadside survey conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA also found that the prevalence of THC (found in marijuana) among drivers on weekend nights increased 48% since 2007, from 8.6% of drivers to 12.6%. Many states have not yet updated their impaired driving laws to address this growing problem.

While we do only one quarter of our driving at night, 50% of traffic deaths happen at night. It doesn't matter whether the road is familiar or not, driving at night is always more dangerous. More than 42,000 people were killed in car crashes in 2020, according to Injury Facts. By taking some extra precautions, we can all contribute to reducing these numbers.

Relaxing guitars, a steady drumline, soft harmonies and soulful lyrics. All of these exist within this Paper Kites track, perfectly encapsulating the feeling of a quiet drive on a dark road late at night.

Honestly, any Arctic Monkeys song could go on a late-night drive playlist. However, this slightly jazzy song takes the cake. The crooned lyrics conjuring images of mirrorballs, late nights, and romance perfectly encapsulate the feeling shared between two people on a drive at night.

Driving at night is a situation that should be approached with special attention. Drivers must never underestimate the precarious nature of night time driving. Although you should not be afraid to drive at night, you should respect the increased level of danger of nighttime driving. The following tips will assist you in making your after-dark drive safer.

Be aware that the dangers of driving are exaggerated after dark. The care and caution that you use while driving during the day must be multiplied when driving at night. While driving at night should not frighten motorists, they must be extremely aware of their surroundings and pay close attention to their vehicle.

When you drive at night, you will notice that all street signs are reflective. While you should not have any difficulty seeing street signs and road markers, you may have to pay special attention if you are driving in an unfamiliar area.

It is best to lower your speed when driving at night. Even with headlights, it will be more difficult to see what is ahead of you on the road at night time. Because your reaction time is slower than it is in daylight, a lower speed is prudent when driving at night.

Keep distractions to a minimum when driving at night. Although you should prevent distractions while driving at any time of the day, driving at night requires even more focused attention. Put away your cell phone, turn the radio down, and ask passengers to assist you in making your knighting driving excursion safe.

Be aware of driver fatigue. Driving at night can be more dangerous because you may experience tiredness or fatigue. If you begin to become sleepy while driving at night, immediately make arrangements for someone else to take the wheel.

If you take all of these things into consideration, you will be more likely to have a safe and uneventful nighttime driving experience. For most drivers, driving at night is unavoidable. Knowing how to keep yourself and your passengers safe while driving at night will reduce stress and make the experience just another enjoyable driving experience. 041b061a72
